Toads and Diamonds

Toads and Diamonds, originally uploaded by VisioLuxus.

"This gift I make you," continued the fairy, "that with every word you speak, either a flower or a jewel will fall from your mouth."

-"Toads and Diamonds" by Charles Perrault

I always found this fairytale fascinatingly awful. Although the bad sister was punished with toads and snakes falling out of her mouth I can't imagine that flowers and jewels falling out of your mouth every time you open it is all that much better.

When I was scrolling down my flist earlier, I literally stopped and said "whoa!" when I saw this. In a good way, of course.

Do not be jealous of your sister.
Know that diamonds and roses
are as uncomfortable when they tumble from
one's lips as toads and frogs:
colder, too, and sharper, and they cut.

Writes Neil Gaiman, in Instructions. I'm not a huge fan of his work but I adore this poem, and of course it was the first thing I thought of—because, yes, it is so true: neither is really a reward. You can hear the whole poem here.

And the photo? Beautiful. ^_^

Dress, lighting and colours are amazing, as always.

Flowers, maybe not so bad because at least some of those are edible. Diamonds? Ouch... In the version of the fairy tale I grew up with, it was gold pieces, which I can't imagine would have been much fun either.
